Birding the north coast and wetlands
A full day of birding through the North part of the island, visiting the Pacific Coast on the West side and the prairies and wetlands of the North. The day starts early in the morning embarking the ferry for a 45 minute navigation through the Chacao Canal. This is the best chance to spot Sooty and Pink-footed Shearwater, Black-browed Albatros, Southern-Giant Petrels, Southern Fulmars, Southamerican Tern and the recently discovered endemic Pincoya Storm Petrel (and learn how to distinguish it from Wilson’s!).
Once on the Island we will be checking the intertidal at the coast of Chacao and Caulín to find different species of shorebirds. In the afternoon we’ll concentrate our birding in the Puñihuil area, a great place to spot two species of Penguins (Humboldt and Magellanic), among other specialties of the South Pacific Ocean Coast and the Humboldt Current, plus the cryptic and foliage-skulking Ochre-flanked Tapaculo on the edge of the vegetation line near the rocky coast.
Some of the species that can be found in this tour: Magellanic and Humboldt Penguin, Pincoya Storm Petrel, Wilson Sorm Petrel, Sooty Shearwater, Pink-footed Shearwater, Southern Fulmar (once non breeding season), Flightless Steamer-Duck, Rock Cormorant, Red-legged Cormorant, Whimbrel, Hudsonian Godwit, Red Shoveler, Silvery Grebe, Red Knot, Sanderling, among others.
