ITINERARY
Arrival at Calama airport where our team will welcome you to begin the journey toward the oasis of San Pedro de Atacama, located at 2,450 m above sea level. This village embodies the full identity of the desert, with houses made of mud and straw, alleyways full of shops and local craft stores, and a top-tier gastronomic offering made from local products. After check-in at the hotel and a couple of free hours to explore San Pedro and acclimatize to the altitude, we will meet up to visit the area known as Vallecito. A zone of impressive geological formations that offers the best colors in the late afternoon. We will take advantage of this visit to this little-known area for an open-air picnic before returning to the hotel and preparing for the next day of hiking. Picnic-style dinner included. Overnight in San Pedro de Atacama.
Today we explore the Rainbow Valley, one of the most impressive landscapes in terms of colors and hues in the Atacama Desert. The area sits among the Domeyko Mountains, with a landscape made up of unique rocky formations rich in minerals that offer a colorful mix of colors, from red and green to purple, yellow, and white. The best way to discover this valley is on foot, so we will have the opportunity to do a 5–7 hour hike to uncover this hidden corner of the desert. After the walk, we will move on to Yerbas Buenas, where an impressive collection of pre-Columbian petroglyphs awaits us, witnesses to the settlement of these areas over millennia. Breakfast and box lunch included. Dinner on your own in San Pedro. Overnight in San Pedro de Atacama.
Max Altitude of the day: 3.525 m.a.s.l
Total ascent 147 m / Total descent 406 m
A pre-dawn departure from San Pedro to reach the legendary El Tatio Geysers, one of the highest geothermal fields in the world, sitting at 4,320 m above sea level. As soon as the first rays of sunlight reach this area of the Andes, the columns of steam from the geysers and the colors of the sky and mountains offer a truly incredible spectacle. It is also possible, for the more adventurous, to take a dip in the natural hot springs. Afternoon return to San Pedro and free time to explore the village. Breakfast (box lunch style) included. Lunch and dinner on your own. Overnight in San Pedro de Atacama.
Max Altitude of the day: 4.270 m.a.s.l
A journey that begins by car to reach the San Pedro River, where we start walking toward the Cordillera de la Sal to arrive, after a 2-hour hike, at a panoramic viewpoint with a spectacular view of the Andes and the areas covered by salt flats. We continue for approximately two hours along paths used for herding that wind through these rocky zones in search of vicuñas and local wildlife. The history of the altiplano herding communities unfolds before our eyes as we advance and reconnect with our van to reach the hidden lagoons of Baltinache. Return to San Pedro in the afternoon.
Astronomical tour (optional): If you love the stars, you are in the best place in the world for an astronomical tour. Our specialized guide will take you on an interstellar journey through the clearest skies on earth in a private experience for our group.
